Evaluation - Presentation

As I now know what I wanted to say, I had to create a PowerPoint presentation in order to run behind me while I was presenting.

This is the PowerPoint presentation I created and used for my evaluation: (as it had animations on, all details are not very clear to see)

Notes on Evaluation

As I have now finished creating my magazine, I have to evaluate everything I have done; these are my notes for my evaluation:

POISON reader profile

This is the Reader Profile I created on Adobe Photoshop for my music magazine:

Front cover for my magazine

Using the plan I created for my front page and also the photo I edited I created my front cover for my music magazine

This is my front cover for my music magazine:

My final contents page

This is my final contents pages, I after I edited everything:

Picture for contents page

This was the picture I wanted to use for my contents page, for final:

BEFORE I edited the image:

AFTER the edit:

Image for contents page

This was the other image I took to use for my contents page, but I wanted to edit it first.

BEFORE I edited the image:

AFTER I edited the image:

First draft of contents

This was the first draft of the contents page I created:

From this I realised that the picture I used does not go with the music genre I chose, also i wanted to add another picture to do with fashion,as my magazine was to do with fashion too, so I had to re-edit it.

My colour palette

These are the colours I want to stick with while creating my front cover, the contents page and the interview page. I chose these colours as my target audience was only females and also as they are emo’s they will be into the colour black, but just the colour black would not be interesting to use on a magazine. That was the reason to why I chose to use the shades of pink and purple.

Annotating contents page

To get a good understanding of contents pages, as a pair I annotated three different magazines. One is the mixmag, the other two were Q magazine and Kerrang. From looking at these three magazines I was able to see they all had a house style and were all different in their own ways. All there magazines had different layout and had their own colour theme. Also I realized that they had sub heading to separate their articles and used quite a few pictures to attract their audience. From doing this task I was able to see that for my own contents page, I wanted to have a colour theme that my audience will like, I wanted to have sub heading to separate my articles that would go in my magazine and also I wanted to use more than one picture.

This was the presentation i did while, looking at the other contents pages:

Final Interview Page

As I have now had the image edited and the questions and answers for my interview page, I started to create my interview page. I created the interview page on Adobe Photoshop.

This was my interview page:

Simulation Task

For my stimulation task I had to work with a partner and design a magazine for readers aged 17-25, then we were told to decide how much I would charge an advertising company for an A4 colour advert.

This was our response:

We said we would charge £ 3,920 for an A4 colour page

Also we said that our magazine would offer discounts.

4 weeks 5 %

12 weeks 7.5 %

26 weeks 12.5 %

52 weeks 25 %

As this was a completion with the class, we had to quickly come up with a design of a magazine, then stand in front of the whole class and say why we chose to do the magazine how we done it.

We won second price, as other peers who had to pick a magazine to advertise their products on a magazines, majority of them picked our magazine

From this task I was able to see what institutions look out for, also I wa sable to see what companies look out for in a magazine when they want to advertise a product of theirs

Rough layout for my front cover

To make it easier for me to design the Front cover, using paint, I created a rough sketch of how I wanted my magazine front cover to turn out. This really helped me as I knew what I wanted to do and where to put what.

This was my plan:

Pictures for my Front cover

This was the image I wanted to use for my front cover, for this image I wanted to remove the background too, as I wanted to grab my audience’s attention.

BEFORE the picture was edited:

AFTER the picture was edited:

Interview questions i prepared

To make my double page interview, I need questions and answers. So before I started to create my interview page, I designed some questions on Microsoft Word.

This is what I wanted to put into my Interview....

Final images - Interview page

As I have now learnt to use some of the tools on Adobe Photoshop, I started editing my photo that I took to use for my interview page.

This was the image i wanted to use for my double page interview that i was going to create, but i did not want background in the images, as i only wanted the readers to see ho the new artist is, so i thought if i had a background, it would distract the readers. The only reason to why i took the picture outside, is becuase i wanted more lighting on my photo

BEFORE i edited the photo:

AFTER i edited the Photo:

Editing photo for test....

To put the skills I have learnt, I tried editing a picture. I was not going to use this in my magazine, but I wanted to practice before I edited my images that I was going to use in my magazine

This was the BEFORE image:

I wanted to remove the background, change the colour of her shirt and also flip her around.

This was the AFTER image:

As you can see using photoshop i have managed to do what i wanted.

Learning to use Photoshop

As I have taken some my images, I wanted to be able to edit, these images to make it look professional. I did not want to do this on paint, I wanted to edit these images on Adobe Photoshop, where professionals edit their photos on, and so I wanted to give it a go. To get help on using this software, I watched tutorials on the internet.

One of the video I watched was:

Pictures for my Interview Page

I had to create my Interview Page; the first thing I had to do was take pictures. As my magazine was for emo music lovers, I wanted to create an upcoming and growing artist. So as my main artist for my magazine, I created an emo artist, I wanted her to be known, so I created a catchy name for her, “Lulu”. From the two images, i like the second images, but i wanted to edit the images, as i did not like the mis en scene.

These are the images I took to use for my interview page:

Ideas for my magazine name

Before I wanted to carry on creating my magazine, I wanted to create a name for my magazine. I thought this will help me address my target audience more.

Here is a brainstorm of the ideas I had while I was figuring out a name for my magazine:-

It was very hard to chose, but I thought out of all these the only one that was appropriate for my emo magazine was “The Poison”, but I didn’t think it sound good with “the” in it, so I decided to take that out. The reason why I chose “Poison” was because as I was creating an emo magazine, I thought emo’s are more into suicides and death. Also as my magazine had music, fashion and lifestyle, I didn’t think that the name has to fully do with music. So I thought “Poison” was suitable for my magazine.

Sample Photos

To learn to use a camera and also to take sample pictures of what I wanted to include in my magazine, I chose a friend of mine to pose for the pictures. From taking these pictures I was able to see, how I wanted my models to pose for the real images I was going to take to use in my magazine. Also this task helped me to decide what I wanted my models to be wearing and also where I wanted to take the images I was going to use for the magazine I was going to create.

These were my sample images:

Target Audience Questionnaire

As I already decided, I wanted to create a magazine for emo/rock music lovers. To find out information about my target audience I designed a questionnaire, from this I will be able to create a magazine that my audience will like and also it will help me create a reader profile for my magazine

This was the questionnaire i created:

Creating an account on "slideshare"

In order to upload my work easier, I create a account for myself at slideshare, this is an online account where I can upload any work I wanted to share with others, also I was able to embed the URL’s, this helped me upload work on to my blog easier...

This was my account on "slideshare"

Analysing "Q" Magazine - interview conventions

In a group, I had to annotate an interview, taking about everything that was on the page. From doing this I was able to see the conventions of interviews that are on already published magazines. Also this helped me to see how I wanted to do my magazines. From the task I was able to see that everything you wanted to do on the interview, you had to have reasons in doing it, for example, putting a picture on a whole A4 page, this made me see that editors do this to appeal more audiences. So when I had to do my interview I saw that I can only appeal readers by putting interesting things on there. Also from the images that were used, I could see that it needs to address the target audience; all images should have a meaning to it. Also the interview need to be informative and needs to be different to any other interviews.

This is the powerpoint presentation, i created while looking at the interview...

Moodboard

I did this moodboard to show the genre that I have chosen to use for my music magazine, which is rock/emo

Kerrang Reader Profile

Kerrang music magazine focuses on heavy metal/ rock music, the magazine links to Goth/Emo subgenre. From the reader profile, you could see that they target more male reader than female readers. The median age for the magazine is 19 year olds, this shows that they are targeting a younger generation as they understand more about the new trend in fashion, technology and media. On average you could see that 31 albums are being sold each year, from this you could say that it is a good amount as it is always hard for the students to buy an album with the money they earn. As the readers are at a very young age, fashion is very important to them, as they mimic the look of their rock stars, also the magazine talks to its audience in a language that the target audience understand. The Kerrang magazine gives its audience free posters of well known rock and heavy metal artist, this will encourage more people to buy the magazine because they get a big poster that they can put in their room.

To get the project going, we had to start by picking a music magazine and use their reader profile, to research their target audience
I chose to look at the NME Music magazine...

Contrasts and Comparisons of magazine front covers.

I looked at these two front covers to get a good idea of how a magazine should be and what should be included on a magazine, also i was able to compare the different magazines, this enable me to see that not all magazines have the same layout and the same colour scheme, they are all done different to catch the reader's attention
